Fencing EMG biofeedback prototype
A forearm wearable wired to an épée that tells a fencer when they're gripping too hard during a hit — where biosignals meet my other sport.
- Sensing
- Surface EMG (forearm)
- Feedback
- Haptic + on-board display
- Link
- Bluetooth — live plotting and logging
- Enclosure
- FDM print
Over-gripping the weapon is a common fault in épée — it kills point control and tires the hand. This prototype tried to make that fault visible in the moment.
How it works
- Surface EMG from the forearm, with the device physically connected to the weapon.
- When forearm contraction goes too high during a touch, the fencer gets haptic feedback and a reading on a small on-board screen.
- A Bluetooth link to a computer allows live visualisation and logging of the data for later analysis.
- Enclosure is FDM-printed, protecting the electronics while staying wearable on the forearm.
A small, personal project — the intersection of the biosignals work and coaching. Paused, but the idea keeps coming back.
